Influence of 2.75 to 11 moles sucrose as an exogenous osmoprotectant on salt stressed (7.8-9.1 and 18.2 ms/cm) and temperature stressed (42.36C) Azolla (A. filiculoides Lam.) was studied. Results showed that enriching salt stressed (9.1 ms/cm) Azolla by 5.5 moles sucrose significantly increased survival percent (S%) and freshness percent (F%), in comparison with control treatment in which no sucrose was used. Enriching Azolla media by 2.75, 5.5 and 8.25 moles sucrose in optimum growth condition (24.18C and 0.65 mS/cm), had no significant effects on growth doubling time (D.T), S% and F% in comparison with control. Enriching Azolla media by 11 moles sucrose in optimum growth condition decreased significantly the S% and F%, in comparison with control plots. Enriching Azolla media by 5.5 moles sucrose, in all salinity levels (0.65, 7.8, 9.1 and 18.25 ms/cm), and air temperatures (24.18 and 42.36C), non increased S% and F% but not significantly and decreased D.T.A positive correlation was o.....

Feeding regime of the Persian sturgeon in the southern basins of the Caspian Sea was studied in summer and winter 2006 in three provinces Guilan, Mazandaran and Golestan. We caught 52 fish specimens in 85 sampling sites varying in depths from 2-100 m using bottom trawls. The average weight and length of fish specimens were 332.81+1 g and 37.69±1 cm, respectively. The alimentary tract of fishes were analyzed and 11 food items including Gobiidae, Gammaridae, Mysidae, Nereidae, Ampharetidae, Pseudocumidae, Clupeidae, Syngnathidae, Scrobicularidae, insects and Cardiidae were identified. The highest feed diversity was observed in Mazandaran province (9 items) and the lowest in the Golestan province (4 items). Although Nereids showed the highest percentage of benthic organisms (49%) but they were of secondary and tertiary importance in the fish diet qualitatively. Comparison of Fulton's condition factor of fishes in the three provinces showed a similar pattern (0.3<1(<0.4). A Tukey test reve.....

The probiotic effects of Bacillus spp. bacteria on the growth and survival rate of Litopenaeus vannamei in 30 and 40 gii, salinities was investigated. We conducted the experiment in Bandargah Research Station, Bushehr province during 45 days. Four treatments with three replicates, and two controls were used and probiotic powder, dissolved in water along with the growth stage pellet was applied in 3Oppt and 4Oppt salinities. The control treatments were only fed by the growth stage pellet in 3Oppt and 4Oppt salinities. The results revealed that growth and survival rate of treatment groups in 3Oppt salinity exposed to the probiotic powder were higher than those of the controls without increasing probiotic powder (P<0.05). Although the growth rate of treatment groups in 4Oppt salinity was higher than those of the control without increasing probiotic powder in 4Oppt salinity, but there was no significant difference between the two (P>0.05). Survival rate of the treatment groups in 4Oppt sal.....

Sardinella sindensis is one of the dominant small pelagic fishes of Persian Gulf, especially in Qeshm Island's coastal waters. Investigation on some of the biological parameters of Sind Sardinella was carried out from April 2005 to March 2006. Sind Sardinella is economically the most important small pelagic fish species mainly caught by double boat purse seine in this area. Reproductive studies showed that peak maturity season occurred in May. The female to male ratio was calculated at 1:1.08 and chi-square analysis showed the difference in ratio was not statistically significant (P>0.05). LM sub(50) is attained at a total length of 112 mm. The average absolute and relative fecundity were estimated to be 23396 ( plus or minus 5337) and 739 ( plus or minus 117), respectively. This fish is planktonivore, and we found the diet of the species consisted of a broad spectrum of food types, but Crustaceans were dominant, comprising 44% of the food. The other major food groups and their share w.....

The population genetic structure of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) was examined on 260 specimens from Tajan and Gorgan Rivers, Gorgan Gulf, Anzali Lagoon and other regions in east, middle and west of south Caspian Sea. DNA was extracted from fin tissue by phenol-chlorophorm method with a concentration of 50-100 nanograms. PCR was performed using ND-3/4 and ND-5/6 genes. The PCR products of samples were digested by 15 restriction endonuclease enzymes. The digested products accompanied with standard marker (50 pb). To measure fragment size, samples were run on a 6% vertical poyacrylamide gel. The fragments were visualized by silver staining of the polyacrylamide gel. Statistical analysis of data was performed by Reap software. We detected 14 and 12 different haplotypes in ND-3/4 and ND-5/6 genes of common carp. The mean values of haplotype diversity among populations were 0.59 and 0.48 and the average nucleotide diversity was 0.06 and 0.03 for ND3/4 and ND5/6 genes. Also, the mean values .....

The toxic effects of agricultural pesticides Dyazinon, Hinosan and Tilt (Propiconazole) were studied on Acipenser nudiventris fingerlings (1-3g) in Spring 2005. We conducted our experiments in aquaria holding 20L water in static systems based on O.E.C.D method using five treatments, one control concentration and three replications. In each aquarium, ten individual Ship Sturgeon fingerlings were introduced, and water physical and chemical factors were controlled to be in the range pH=7-8, TH>400mg/l (CaCO sub(3)) as for the water used for culture, and DO=80% and temperature was kept between 24 plus or minus 1C. Our results for the LC sub(50) value of Dyazinon, Hinosan and Tilt in 96 hours were 0.36, 0.28 and 3.9mg/l in the fish fingerlings. We also determined the maximum allowable concentration value of the toxins at 0.036, 0.028 and 0.39, respectively......

Canning of non-exportable small cultured shrimp (Penaeus indices) in oil, tomato sauce and brine was investigated in Hormozgan province. Our results indicated that the best method of canning of this shrimp was to precook it at 100'c for 2 minutes in 8% salt water which Contained 0.1% citric acid, then autoclaving the can for 12 minutes at 121°C. Results of an organoleptic evaluation showed that the shrimp packed in oil, tomato sauce and brine ranked by the taste panel as the first, second and third respectively. The changes in chemical composition, total bacteria count and Clostridium botulinum for the three samples of canned shrimp were also investigated. These changes were 18.90-22.59% for protein, 2.28-3.01% for fat, 70.7046.51% for moisture, 1.45-2.53% for ash, 19.64-29.35 mg/100g for TVN, 6.28i-7.03 for pH and zero for peroxide. The results for Clostridium botulinum and total count of bacteria for all samples of canned shrimp in three dilutions (0.1, 0.01 and 0.001) were negative .....

The direct contact of the fish gill with water makes it one the most susceptible organs of the fishes where microbial and chemical water pollution causes pathological lesions to the gill. We studied the variety and abundance of gill lesions of rainbow trout and compared them between extensive and intensive culture systems. We selected four farms of rainbow trout culture in East Azerbaijan province, two extensive and two intensive culture farms and collected 384 gill samples from each culture system in autumn 2006. After gross examination, representative sections of the gills were fixed immediately in 10% neutral buffered formalin, processed routinely, and embedded in paraffin. Tissue sections were cut to 4km thickness and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. Histopathologically, most of the lesions, in intensive system, were mainly consisted of edema and hyperemia. However, epithelial hypertrophy, hyperplasia and telangiectasia were also seen. In extensive system, the lesions were more seve.....

Macrobenthos are important elements of the sea ecosystems living in the sediments and include Polychaeta, Decapoda and Mollusca. Some species of this group are considered as biological indicators for aquatic ecosystems. Macrobenthos are mostly sedentary which can be used as indexes of ecological conditions. We studied and compared benthic community structure as bioindicators of pollution in Ghazaleh and Ghanam estuaries, east and west of Moosa Estuary. Six groups of macrobenthos were identified and isolated of which the abundant groups were Decapoda with 23.3% and Gastropoda with 21.6%. The highest abundance of macrobenthos (1932 individual m2) was recorded at the extreme end of Ghanam estuary, and the lowest of (818 individual m2) was recorded of the front part of Ghazaleh estuary. Of the most significant contaminating factors in the region were pollutants from urban and industrial waste water, waste materials from oil leakage, and ship balance water. The results indicated that Ghazal.....
