Mullet are abundant in costal and estuarine waters of Hormozgan. One of the fishing gears used for catching the species is Moshta, one type of set net. In present research 7 species have been identified in catch composition. The most abundant species were Liza carinata and Valamugil seheli respectively. L. vaigiensis, L. melinoptera, L. alata, Valamugil buchanani and Mugil cephalus were other mullet species found in catch composition. The smallest species was L. carinata with an average length of 11 cm and the largest species was M. cephalus with an average length of 35.5 cm......

Food habits and spawning season of Acanthopagrus latus (Sparidae) were studied in Bushehr, Delvar and Rostami waters of the Persian Gulf. Samples have been collected from March 1996 to February 1997 on a monthly basis. A total of 87 males and 95 females were examined and different biological parameters were measured. The Relative Length of the Gut (RLG) was estimated to be 0.64, which indicates that this is a carnivorous species. Food items have also been identified using numerical method. Out of 159 stomachs studied 36.36% were found to contain crabs, 33.99% other fish and 13.43% shrimps. The content of snails and sea urchins were 11/46% and 4/ 76% respectively. It is evident from the results of the study that A. latus feeds mainly on crabs and fish. The vacuity index was calculated to be 0.13. This indicated that this fish is an active predator. The Gonado Somatic Index (GSI) was estimated to be highest during February - March and lowest in June. GSI maxima was coincided with fecun.....

This study was conducted to assess migration potential of Sepid Rud River which was naturally used for migration in past. The investigation included an area from the mouth up to 30 km covering part of river's potamon region. During 35 days, starting from 21th April to 25th May 1993, 54 samples of Acipenser guldenstadti, 151 individuals of Acipenser persicus and 178 Acipenser stellatus were examined. These comprises 14.1%, 39.4% and 46.5% of the samples respectively. Average total length of these sturgeon fishes were 127 cm, 143.7 cm and 151.1 cm respectively, the sex ratio (M/F) of these migratory fish was 1.4:1, 0.5:1, 0.59:1 for A. stellatus, A. guldenstadti and A. persicus respectively. The migration occurred despite of the shallowness of the river's mouth, caused by a sand-clay barner deposits and despite illegal fishing during migration period. It is recommended that with regulation of water level have optimum water flow by Manjil dam and with a total ban of sturgeon fishing throu.....

Chronic and acute effects of stress on the reproductive system and hormonal balance in higher vertebrates is well documented, but the subject is little investigated on fish. Understanding the courses of stress to eliminate or minimize them, will contribute to designing culture systems, or methods, based on the physiological requirements of fish. This will consequently enhance production of cultured fish. This study has investigated the effects of stress as a result of handling and induced spawning through injection of HCG (1100 IU/kg), GnRH (2 Ug/kg), dopamine antagonist (25 mg/kg) and distilled water (0.5 cc/kg). Taking into consideration that the secretion of cortisol is the first response to stress, therefor the level of cortisol in the blood of injected fish (rainbow trout spawners) was compared by using Radio Immuno-Assay technic. In three treatments cortisol level of blood after 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 minutes after stress was measured. The present study showed a significant in.....

This research was conducted in the southern coasts of the Caspian Sea from Babolsar to Bandar-e-Torkaman. Samples were collected from commercial catches (beach seine with a mesh size of 5 mm). Sampling was carried out monthly (from Sep. 1993 to Sep. 1994) to evaluate the biological characteristics including total and fork length, weight, age, gonad weight and sex. The results indicated that scale and operculum can be used for, however, from operculum better results were obtained. The first annulus is not detectable on scale and it is very difficult to distinguish annuli on the scales of aged mullets. This study also showed that maximum growth takes place at the age of 3 years. The b value of relation between length and weight was estimated to be 3.019. Sex ratio was 1:1.3 and females were dominant. The Gonado Somatic Index (GSI) study indicated that the spawning season is September - November. Most spawning accurse on October. Males become ready for reproduction earlier than female. Th.....

A parasitological survey was carried out during 1994-1996 in Mazandaran and Guilan Provinces (Caspian Sea). 159 samples from 17 different species were examined. Samples were collected from Tajan River, Anzali Lagoon and some fish farms. Immediately after caught live fish were transported to laboratory and kept in aquarium for further examination. During this study ten species of Myxosporean parasites were separated, identified and classified. This is the first report on infestation of inland fishes of Iran by these ten parasite species. Morphology of spores, development stages of plasmodia, tissue specifications and cyst production of these parasite species were investigated in the present study. Four of the Myxosporeans were identified as potential pathological hazards for three fish species. These are Myxobolus pavlovski for Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and Big Head (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), M. bramae for Kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum). M.muelleri and M. ellipsoides f.....

Northern pike (Esox lucius L.) as a major game fish can be valuable in the management of water resources. In the present study, a total of 152 pikes from four areas: Abkenar (24%), Sorkhankool (10%), Siakeshim (54%) and Sheyjan (12%) were sampled. Female fishes were 75.6% of the samples and males were only 24.4%. Northern pike showed relatively fast growth and fishes above two years of age were mature and reached an average length of 32 cm. Feeding intensity and growth co-efficient in this species were correlated. Growth was highest in the lower age groups and with an increase in age and size, the feeding intensity and growth co-efficient of this have decreased. Northern pike in different ages feeds on different species of fish found in Anzali Lagoon. The most important of these fish species are Carassius auratus, Hemiculter leucisculus, Rhodeus sericeus amarus and larvae of Chalcalburnus chalcoides. In the 0+ age group pike mainly feeds on zooplanktonic Mysids. The results of the pr.....
